“Your soul knows the geography of your destiny. Your soul alone has the map of your future, therefore you can trust this indirect, oblique side of yourself. If you do, it will take you where you need to go, but more important it will teach you a kindness of rhythm in your journey.” (John O’Donohue)

In Brennan Healing Science, there are five types of energies: Push, Pull, Stop, Allow and Neutral. Most of us are experts at pushing, pulling or stopping. One of the first things we learn as toddlers is “No!” and “Mine!” Very good boundaries to have! Toddlers have a definitive and clear Stop energy that becomes tempered with sharing as they grow.

Sharing teaches us Allow. My turn, then I allow your turn. However, Allow may get mixed up with Push and Pull. “I want it!” That’s a Pull. “I need it!” That’s also a Pull that may place us in a victim or an entitled position. I’m sure you’ve all been around people who suck the energy out of you.

With Push, I also want and/or need it, but at your expense, and with me in control. This is more a situation of not trusting rather than feeling victimized. When I Push I don’t always allow the free-flow of energy that supports the interconnectedness of life.

Now Push and Pull are not all selfish. At times, boundaries must be allowed to become firmer, even aggressive in the face of adversity. The same with knowing what you deserve. You deserve happiness and love and pulling that energy into yourself with laughter, dancing or exercise really bolsters your spirit.

This is where the rhythm becomes important. Energy is just that—energy. Becoming aware of your own flow of Push, Pull, Allow and Stop (or Pause) comes first. And, when this is done with kindness, the energy becomes relational and it flows in balance and harmony.

As we become aware of our energy flow, we can also become aware of the connections that energy is creating. When this flow is done with kindness, I become responsive to something larger than myself. This energy response takes into account all that is around us. Then it does not just flow in one direction, but achieves a rhythm of giving and receiving, expansion and contraction.

We frequently forget the energy of Neutral. This much-needed element is the observer, the witness—nothing to do; nowhere to go. I am here now, present to what is. When I begin in Neutral it is so much easier to watch my energy transform to Push, Pull, Stop or Allow. In this way, I can be the one making the decisions. I can be responsive rather than reactive.

This Neutral energy also gives me an opportunity to ask questions:

  • When have I felt this before? Where do I feel it in my body?
  • How does it make me feel?
  • What do I really want to do if I am acting with kindness?

I am of the opinion that my soul resides in this Neutral place, this place of stillness, and it will lead me home.
